Today is National Doughnut (Donut) Day, and National Leave the Office Early Day. What does this mean for you?

This is your holiday if you are a doughnut lover. If you are a fan of leaving early for the day and your efficient schedule allows you to skip out of work in the afternoon, this is a great benefit and a nice way to start the weekend. We would like to share with you little fun facts about the story behind each day. Should you like to partake in both…lucky you!

National Doughnut Day celebrated in the United States, is on the first Friday of June of each year. Succeeding the Doughnut event created by The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to honor those of their members who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. The holiday celebrates the doughnut (a.k.a. donut) – a yummy, torus-shaped piece of dough that is deep-fried and sweetened. Many American doughnut stores offer free doughnuts on National Doughnut Day.

There are three other doughnut holidays; their origins are not quite as detailed. International Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day is recognized on June 8. National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day is celebrated on September 14. Buy a Doughnut Day takes place on October 30.

Leave the Office Earlier Day is an incentive for employees to complete tasks before schedule, making a conscious effort to increase their efficiency and productivity so they can go home sooner. The perspective of leaving early from the workplace acts as a carrot for the 'hare' inside all of us, compelling employees to perform his or her tasks to his or her maximum potential, reducing levels of idleness amongst workers.

This day was the invention of Laura Stack, a specialist in employee productivity, amongst other things. Stack noted that Americans work about 49 hours a week and a total of about 350 more hours a year than most Europeans. The quicker things get done, at optimal levels, the more productive (and profitable) business will be.

So for today…Friday, June 2, 2017, go out and celebrate! Whether you start or finish the day with a doughnut or you choose to leave the office early because your work is complete make sure you share this day with others, so they do not miss out on the fun. Make it GREAT!
